Humanican is a charitable and non-profit Society whose business is to plan, approve and execute trips to developing nations for those who live in the developed world. These trips have as their centerpiece humanitarian development projects which build social, educational, or health infrastructure. North American students have the opportunity to undertake practical social entrepreneurship in a global issue of importance. These issues include clean water, AIDS, child labour, women in developing countries, power, authority & decision-making, global infant care and education.

Humanican serves young people who believe they are part of a neighborhood so large that it stretches from the shores of Lake Victoria up the Himalayas across Asia and up the Amazonia. Borders are only a failure of our ability to use our imagination.

The Alumni and supporters of Humanican promote a relationship of mutual social investment through travel in developing nations. They build peace with every visit.

Humanican combines the humanitarian and development opportunities with the opportunity to explore the culture and region they are visiting. Typically, students work the week with their local NGO contact and then spend the weekends exploring the sites, markets and natural beauty of whatever nation they are visiting. There is play amongst the work that Humanican undertakes.

Humanican plans to raise twenty thousand dollars this year though direct or indirect fundraising campaigns. It will cost our organization an estimated one thousand dollars to accomplish this goal. The money raised will support our work in Mozambique, Thailand and Laos. Specifically, these funds will support the month to month requirements of street kids outreach in Mozambique as well as any emergency medical costs for the kids. We hope to provide ten or more thousand dollars to this worthy effort. In our Asian destinations, the funding will be devoted to building projects, associated with our planned travel. The estimated cost of the latter is approximately five thousand dollars to build and partially equip the school. Twenty to one administration to donation costs is our goal. So far this year we have spent less than 100 dollars on these costs.

For further information or to give to Humanican’s work abroad please contact Nigel McCarthy, (403-255-5300). Click here for our mailing address.

Humanican is now an official charity in Canada. As such it can provide tax receipts to its supporters. Humanican does not solicit through fundraising companies nor with direct mail or any other sort of advertising. We rely on those who have come to know us to see the inherent value of offering this dream to our kids.
